| Harlow College UCU - Strike Report - 24th May 2007 |
|||||||||||||||||
London Region UCU’s call for colleges across the city to collect money and organise solidarity protests and stalls on the first day of Harlow’s strike action was very well supported by a number of different colleges. We decided to make the call because our colleagues at Harlow are fighting for the future of FE. They need our support. As trade unionists we all know that we are far more effective if we are united. The response from members across the region has been fantastic. Richmond College, Ealing, Hammersmith and West London, Barnet and the Finsbury Park branch at City and Islington College set up petition stalls in their colleges and have raised £905, £200, £170 and £294 respectively, so far. As one Richmond branch member said: ”Members donated their money willingly and enthusiastically. They are appalled at the situation in Harlow where one in three teachers face pay cuts of up to £10,000 and a huge increase in working hours.” Harlow strikers addressed meetings at both branches at Tower Hamlets College yesterday and a further £258 was raised. UCU members at Southwark College and London Metropolitan University went around their staff rooms collecting signatures in support of Harlow UCU and have so far raised £170 and £300 respectively. At the Camden Road branch at City and Islington College, colleagues organised a lunchtime protest outside their site to make their message of solidarity clear and have raised £500 so far. A lunchtime protest was also organised at Lambeth College after the branch unanimously agreed the following motion: "This Branch condemns the attack on conditions, the downgrading, and intimidation of staff at Harlow College. We send a message of solidarity to the striking members there and agree to raise a levy of £10 per Branch member for the Harlow support fund."
This is a fantastic start but don’t stop - keep collecting signatures and money for Harlow. Let’s make sure that we stop the contract busters.
