The following was sent by Brian Roper in an all staff email on 25th April 2007.

ELECTION OF STAFF TO THE STAFF REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL

Further to the all staff email dated 16 April 2007, I am pleased to report that we have received some late nominations for representatives to the Staff Representative Council.

Given that the formal nominations process closed on 30 March 2007 I have asked the University Secretary to re-open the nominations process.

These late nominations can therefore be accepted and any other staff who also wish to nominate themselves, or a colleague, can also do so in line with the nominations time table outlined below.

Those staff who have already been nominated do not need to be re-nominated, their existing nominations will be carried forward. This new consultative group will be made up of staff representatives from across the University who will be meeting with representatives of the University’s Executive Group and other managers to find out more about what is going on in the University and to discuss, and be consulted on, a range of issues. These will include matters such as changes to policy and procedure, social and welfare facilities, the University’s Business Plan, and issues relating to the annual budget.

I must stress that the aim is to supplement, not to replace, the existing arrangements in place with the recognised Trades Unions for conducting consultation, and to promote a two-way flow of information. The key to the success of this forum will be staff participation. The time commitment is not expected to be onerous. A secretary will take minutes of the meetings which will be published on the Staff Representative Council web site. Representatives will be asked to seek to ascertain and represent the views of their constituents in advance of the meetings on the agenda items to be discussed. Assistance can be given to representatives in setting up a group email address to make this task easier. They will also be granted reasonable access to photocopying facilities in addition to reasonable time away from their core duties to attend meetings and, if necessary, to prepare for meetings e.g. to read paperwork and/or consult with members of their Constituency. Staff representatives will also be able to propose agenda items for discussion.

This is an opportunity for any member of staff who has been employed by the University for more than 12 months, whatever their role within the University, to find out more about what is happening within the University and to get involved in the consultation processes which result in University decisions. This might include staff who have or have not previously have been involved in such activities.

NOMINATIONS

The period for receipt of nominations will be from 9am on Monday 30 April 2007 to 12 noon on Friday 11 May 2007. Nomination forms are also available from the Secretary’s Office, North Campus Room AB1-20, Tower Block, Holloway Road. Ext: 2041/2005/2126.

Completed nomination forms must be returned to and received by the Secretary’s Office, North Campus by 12 noon on Friday 11 May 2007. Nomination forms not properly completed will not be accepted.

Yours faithfully
