London Met UCU - Motions Carried at Congress & HEC

UCU CONGRESS MOTION (31st May 2007) -- Passed by Acclimation

Congress Notes:
  • The failure of London Metropolitan management to abide by previous recognition agreements on the spurious grounds of the merger of AUT and NATFHE.

  • That London Metropolitan management is attempting to impede UCU meetings.

  • That the loss of negotiating rights is having - and will have - a serious effect on members' terms and conditions of work.

If London Met UCU does not report significant progress by September, Congress instructs the NEC to organise:

  • a national campaign to support members at London Metropolitan

  • an academic boycott of London Metropolitan University

  • liaison with the TUC and sister unions and other outside bodies to intervene with London Metropolitan University management.

UCU HIGHER EDUCATION COMMITTEE MOTION (22nd June 2007) -- Passed by Acclimation

The Higher Education Committee notes:
  • That Congress passed by acclamation a motion that instructs the NEC to organise a national campaign to support members at London Met, including a boycott, if there was not significant progress by September 2007 in terms of management recognising UCU and entering into meaningful negotiations with the union on all outstanding issues.

  • That London Met management have just announced up to 60 academic staff redundancies to take place prior to September 2007, and that these redundancies are almost certain to be compulsory.

  • That London Met management is proposing to implement these redundancies without consultation with UCU, the recognised Trades Union.

  • That these redundancies coupled with the intended exclusion of UCU from any consultation process, is without parallel in the HE sector.

The Higher Education Committee resolves:

  • That as a result of the serious escalation at London Met it will immediately launch the national campaign agreed at Congress rather than wait until September 2007

  • Immediately to take out advertisements in national newspapers and the THES to denounce this action by London Metropolitan management and governors and to call on all Vice Chancellors, Principals and workers in the post-16 sector to request of the Vice Chancellor of London Metropolitan University the immediate public recognition of UCU and repudiation of these proposals.

  • To launch an online petition/open-letter in support of London Met UCU and to circulate this request to all UCU members for immediate action.

  • To request that the TUC and individual unions, many of which have significant connections with London Met, issue press releases denouncing the current situation and publicly stating their intention to review all their ongoing work with London Met unless the dispute is resolved forthwith.
