Letter to Lyn Link on Possible Redundancies - 07/05/07

The following was sent to Lyn Link on 7th May 2007.

Dear Lyn,

I am writing to raise a couple of matters upon which I would be grateful for your views. It would be helpful to begin to pick up issues and move forward with them in a positive spirit, I am sure you would agree.

Firstly, it has come to UCU’s attention that redundancies are a possibility within London Metropolitan University. I understand that job reductions of between 25 and 35 FTEs were discussed at the governors’ meeting in March. It would be helpful if you could confirm whether s188 notification has been provided to the DTI on this subject. We would also like to seek clarification of the consultation arrangements which the University intends to set up to deal with this matter. As you would expect, we would anticipate dialogue as one of the recognised trade unions, and as such, we would have thought that consultation should begin sooner rather than later.

Secondly, it seems that the University has begun to consider the requirements of the national framework agreement more closely. UCU would appreciate an early opportunity to meet with representatives of the senior management team to discuss the issues that the framework agreement presents. We would be grateful if you could advise us of the University’s timetable for implementation of the framework agreement, and of the consultation and negotiation arrangements that you anticipate setting up.

I look forward to hearing from you further.

Kind regards,

Barry
